On Longing Assignment

"The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale."
This image reminded me of the prompt because my friend and I give context to the size of the lighthouse in this picture.

"The souvenir speaks to a context of origin through a language of longing, for it is not an object arising out of need or use value."
These little treasure boxes were not created for a useful purpose but as decorative items. They are from a little souvenir shop in my hometown. They are silly little boxes that I had no reason to buy, but I still wanted them so badly because they are quirky and fun.

"The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental, and the three-dimensional, into the miniature, that which can be enveloped by the body. "
This image reminded me of this quote because the little fish figurine can be enveloped by my hand in this picture. It represents something three-dimensional in miniature. I don't want a real fish, but I love my little trinket that's shaped like a fish.
"To have a souvenir of the exotic is to possess both a specimen and a trophy."

This picture I had of the lion from the Lightner museum reminded me of this line from the book because it is a specimen of a lion and also a hunting trophy, presented as a gift. Africa is one of the prime examples of an "exotic" place where people go to trophy hunt, and the lion on display in the Lightner museum is an example of one of those African trophies.

"The place of origin must remain unavailable in order for the desire to be generated."

Anything from space or from the moon is a desirable souvenir because we can't reach those things on our own. Rocks and dust from the moon or a meteor don't have much value aside from how hard they are to come by.
